Your Voice Heard on ESL Amplified

Welcome back from spring break, teachers!  We care deeply about having multiple voices heard on this blog.  We'd love to hear from you about topics that interest you, and how we can get more educators sharing ideas through this blog.

Please take a few moments to post a comment here about what you'd like to see discussed.  Or, feel free to email eslamplified@gmail.com.

Feel free to post questions, ideas, and other topics, too!  Here are a few that our colleagues have been talking about lately:

ASSESSMENT, LITERACY FOR ELLS, COMMON CORE, RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION, WRITING FOR ELLS, CULTURE, PARENT INVOLVEMENT

  1. I want to hear more about how to help families if you don't speak their language. Any resources?

    1. There are many languages available on the NYCDOE website when it comes to parent surveys, testing letters, etc.. technical NYS compliance stuff. What language do you need?

Additionally the NYCDOE has a translation unit available for teachers to reach out to when they need support with native language materials.

The NYCDOE also runs workshops at least once a year, usuually in May, for parents of ELLs. There are translation devices available in a multitude of languages and going in person to an event can connect you to further resources. Try to gather a group of parents and go to the meeting with them that is coming up in May. Hopefully you will find some resources there!

Good luck!! It is great that you want to do this!!

    2. Nicole has some great suggestions! Keep an eye out for a post about involving parents in their children's education coming soon. We have lots of resources and ideas for encouraging family-teacher collaboration. Thanks for your post!

  2. It would be great to have a discussion on what teachers of ELLs are doing to support the implementation of the CCLS. Additionally, what programs do teachers of ELLS favor among the 3 choices for curriculum as approved by the NYCDOE for purchase with NYSTL funds: Core Knowledge K-2, Expeditionary Learning (EL) or Ready Gen K-5?

    1. This is a wonderful idea! We'd love to liven up this space by creating discussions between educators about issues important to ELLs. We're so glad for your input! :)
